Inside this box held the contents of our first Thanksgiving Dinner without my Mom. I picked up everything needed for an entire Thanksgiving Dinner for 8-10 people from the local grocery store. Um, already cooked.
I'm pretty sure I could hear my Mom laughing when I couldn't even manage to follow the "re-heating" instructions that came along with my purchase.
Go ahead, you can laugh too.
But in my defense, how on earth am I suppose to figure out how to re-heat 7 different side dishes that require different temperatures in the oven for different periods of time? Couldn't I just nuke it all? Well, apparently not.
I was lucky enough to have my aunt call me Thanksgiving morning to guide me through the process of re-heating the turkey. Nope, I couldn't even figure that one out. I had no idea the importance of which rack to place the turkey on or why it's important to cover it with foil, etc, etc, etc.
My goodness how do you all do the real deal each year? Yowza!
In the end, I somehow managed to get everything warm at the same time to have a nice dinner with my favorite men on my favorite holiday. In fact the whole "re-heating" debacle got me so sidetracked that I stopped crying and couldn't help but laugh at how ridiculous it is that I can't even re-heat a damn turkey!
And that is exactly what my Mom would have wanted; laughter around the table like every other year.
There were tears that fell in my house on Thanksgiving Day. There were broken hearts that couldn't deny the pain caused by that empty chair. But there was also laughter. Just like Mom used to make.

Next year, that turkey will be even easier to reheat! ;)
ReplyDeleteNow, if only we can get through Christmas...ham is much easier to make!
Hi B. I am sure that your Mom felt that she was missed and smiled down on you on Thanksgiving. God Bless you for trying. I am glad that there was laughter along with the tears. This season will be hard, just know you are in my thoughts and prayers.
ReplyDeleteHey, I'm all for Thanksgiving in a box. It still gets the job done!!
ReplyDeleteAnd I am so thankful to hear that there was laughter mixed in with the tears. You're right - that's exactly what your mome would have wanted.
Lots of love to you friend!
Hugs! A girl has to do what a girl has to do to get through the day, and you did just that with a few tears and some laughter! Cross it off your list!
ReplyDeleteWell I don't know how I missed this post, but I wondered what you ended up doing on Thanksgiving day. Here's how you do it next year, and get all of the food finished and ready to eat at the same time. You invite a house full of people and have everyone bring a covered dish. Salads or relish trays from the people too far to bring a hot dish. Hot dishes from people that live closer. You cook the turkey and open the wine! You have all year to practice by cooking a whole chicken. Seriously, think of the turkey as a chicken, only bigger! They are easy peasy to cook b, YOU CAN DO IT! I'm tellin' ya, you can!
